EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Minimum educational requires a BA/BS Degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Safety, Occupational Health, or other closely related field. Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist certifications are highly desirable. Minimum experience required includes 2 - 5 years safety compliance responsibility in a manufacturing environment. Experience working with pyrotechnics other energetic materials preferred. OSHA Voluntary Protection Program, OHSAS 18001, and/or ISO 14001, experience is desired.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in written and diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Must be able to read, comprehend and interpret, policies, federal regulations, and Material Safety Data Sheets. Must be able to understand and apply DSSA, Inc. documentation including SOP, MI, PS, PMP, MSP, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to lighting and temperature as required for the office and manufacturing areas. Appropriate safety equipment is required by area. There is potential exposure to hazardous chemicals. A considerable amount of moving from department to department may occur in unfavorable weather conditions. The employee is exposed to the inherent dangers of the explosive materials used in DSSA, Inc. manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the administration and continued development of DSSA, Inc. Safety programs to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations. Emphasis of this position comprises of 29 CFR part 1910 compliance activities including process safety management, process hazard/risk analysis, ergonomic evaluations, industrial air & noise monitoring, regulation interpretation, machine guarding design and testing, program enhancement, OSHA VPP certification activities, emergency management, and other risk reduction activities. Prepares engineering reports, authors programs & procedures, documents investigative analysis, drafts risk reduction proposals, and provides regulatory agency correspondence as needed. This position will also assist in compliance with other regulatory programs, as needed. Develops and administers related training programs and record-keeping systems as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develops and implements programs and procedures to ensure compliance with all applicable safety, health & environmental regulations.
  • Develops, implements, and delivers associated training programs.
  • Develops and manages associated record-keeping systems.
  • Participates in meetings and project teams as the safety compliance representative.
  • Identifies and interprets applicable regulations and proactively informs management of issues and potential solutions.
  • Provides subject matter expert review of procedures, mishap reports, and other documents.
  • Serves as liaison with regulatory agencies, customers, and contractors.
  • Prepares and submits correspondence to regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains consistent presence in plant to monitor compliance and educate employees.
  • Conducts and documents safety and health-related facility and equipment inspections.
  • Analyzes, monitors, and provides recommendations regarding toxic and hazardous substances.
  • Participates in routine compliance audits and related assessment activities.
  • Performs other safety & health regulatory compliance duties as assigned.

The individual must be able to demonstrate a strong working knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal regulations, particularly 29, 40 & 49 CFR, as well as experience with the environmental permitting process. Ability to work effectively with all levels of employees and management in a team-oriented environment. Proficiency in arithmetic, chemistry, Microsoft Applications (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) with an emphasis on spreadsheet preparation, working knowledge of World Class Environmental and Safety programs, excellent communication, motivational and organizational skills. This position also requires the ability to understand all policies, procedures, instructions, rules, and regulations (including all safety training and safety information) associated with this position which are written in English. In addition, the individual must be able to appropriately respond to these and, where needed, provide reports, presentations, information, and communications in English. Must be available to work days, evenings, or weekends, overtime, and travel domestically and internationally as required.
